Nicolas Jack Roeg (15 August 1928 – 23 November 2018) was an English film director and cinematographer, renowned for directing works such as Performance (1970), Walkabout (1971), Don't Look Now (1973), The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), Bad Timing (1980) and The Witches (1990). Roeg's directorial debut came 23 years into his film career, a trajectory marked by his unique visual and narrative style characterized by disjointed and disorienting editing. For this reason, he was deemed a highly influential filmmaker, influencing directors such as Steven Soderbergh, Christopher Nolan, and Danny Boyle. The British Film Institute in 1999 acknowledged Roeg's significant contributions to the British film industry and named Don't Look Now and Performance the 8th- and 48th-greatest British films of all time in its Top 100 British films poll. Roeg's films are known for their complex, mosaic-like structures, full sense only surface in the final moments with the revelation of crucial information, a style that has influenced many prominent filmmakers. Roeg passed away in 2018 after being active in the industry from 1947 to 2013.
