Nick Cravat, born Nicholas Cuccia on January 10, 1912 in Manhattan, New York City, was an American actor and stunt performer whose career spanned the golden age of Hollywood. He grew up in a working‑class Italian‑American family and changed his hard‑to‑pronounce surname after a beloved stage character, adopting the memorable moniker Cravat. As a teenager he met future star Burt Lancaster at a New York summer camp, and the two forged a lifelong friendship that would shape both of their careers. In the early 1930s they created the acrobatic duo “Lang and Cravat,” touring with the Kay Brothers circus in Florida and performing vaudeville acts across the United States until a hand injury to Lancaster in 1939 forced the act to end. The pair later reunited in Hollywood, where Cravat appeared in nine of Lancaster’s films, including The Flame and the Arrow (1950), The Crimson Pirate (1952), Run Silent, Run Deep (1958), The Scalphunters (1968) and The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977). Because of his thick Brooklyn accent, Cravat was often cast as a mute or non‑speaking character, delivering physical comedy and stunt work that highlighted his circus training. His most iconic television moment came in the 1963 Twilight Zone episode “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” where he portrayed the unsettling gremlin perched on an airplane wing. Off‑screen, Cravat married twice; his first marriage to Mae Ruth Simpkins Cuccia ended with her death in 1952, and he later wed Cecilia Brink, with whom he had two daughters, Marcelina “Marcy” and Christina “Tina.” Marcy followed a creative path as an environmental documentary filmmaker, earning multiple awards for her work. Nick Cravat succumbed to lung cancer on January 29, 1994 in Woodland Hills, California, and was laid to rest at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of daring physical performances and a friendship that endured through decades of cinema.
