Luis Bermejo (born 1931-09-04 in Madrid, Spain) was a renowned Spanish illustrator and comic‑book artist whose career spanned more than six decades, leaving an indelible mark on the European comics scene. From a young age he was fascinated by graphic storytelling, devouring the pages of pulp magazines and the works of early masters such as Hugo Pratt and Albert Uderzo, which inspired him to pursue formal training at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios in Madrid. After completing his studies in the early 1950s, Bermejo entered the professional world as a freelance penciler, quickly gaining recognition for his dynamic line work, meticulous attention to historical detail, and a distinctive ability to blend realism with the exaggerated flair typical of adventure comics. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s he collaborated with major publishing houses like Editorial Bruguera and the French publisher Série Noire, contributing to beloved series such as “Les Aventures de Tanguy et Laverdure” and “Le Grand Mort”. His most celebrated work came during the 1980s when he partnered with writer Carlos Giménez on the critically acclaimed graphic novel “Los Sorprendentes”, a stark exploration of Spain’s post‑Franco transition that earned him the prestigious Gran Premio del Cómic in 1985. Beyond comics, Bermejo ventured into illustration for postage stamps, museum exhibitions, and educational textbooks, demonstrating a versatility that earned him the nickname “the chameleon of Spanish illustration”. His later years were marked by mentorship, as he taught at the Escuela de Arte y Diseño in Valencia, nurturing a new generation of illustrators who continue to echo his bold visual language.
