Leonard Rossiter (21 October 1926 – 5 October 1984) was an English actor whose career spanned three decades, earning him a reputation as one of Britain’s most versatile character performers. Born in Wavertree, Liverpool, he was the second son of John and Elizabeth Rossiter and grew up above his father’s barber shop, an upbringing that grounded his later portrayals of working‑class figures. After his father’s death in the 1941 May Blitz, Rossiter abandoned a university place to support his mother, serving as a sergeant in the Intelligence Corps and later the Army Education Corps during National Service, where he honed a talent for writing letters for fellow soldiers. He left a six‑year stint as an insurance clerk to follow his girlfriend’s challenge, joining the Wavertree Community Centre Drama Group and making a professional stage debut in 1954, quickly mastering a staggering 75 roles in his first 19 months, which he later credited for his prodigious line‑learning ability. His theatrical work ranged from repertory houses in Wolverhampton and Salisbury to the prestigious Bristol Old Vic, where he described the experience as “the bedrock of his career,” and included notable productions such as The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui and Semi‑Detached in New York. Transitioning to screen, Rossiter appeared in films like A Kind of Loving (1962) and Barry Lyndon (1975), but it was television that cemented his fame: he became a household name as Rupert Rigsby in the ITV sitcom Rising Damp (1974‑1978) and as the hapless Reginald Perrin in the BBC series The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (1976‑1979). His distinctive delivery and wry wit also led to memorable roles in Oliver!
