He watches Monsieur Boniface, whose domineering wife forces meetings, and neighbour Henri, whose beautiful wife Marcelle craves attention. In the Parisian Hotel Paradiso, Georges Feydeau wrestles with writer’s block while quietly observing the guests around him, hoping to mine a fresh premise for his next play. The hotel becomes a stage for the foibles and desires of its visitors, starting with Benedict Boniface, a man henpecked by his domineering wife, and Marcelle Cotte, a glamorous wife neglected by her husband, Henri Cotte who works as a building inspector and is sent to check rumors of ghosts that haunt the place. The rumors turn out to be grounded not in the supernatural but in practicalities of the hotel’s plumbing.
The hotel then serves as the clandestine meeting place for those two lovers, as the affair between Marcelle and Boniface unfolds behind closed doors, even as a police raid threatens to expose them. Family friend Martin arrives with his two little daughters, but there isn’t enough room at Boniface’s place for everyone, so he checks in as well. Martin overhears the hotel’s name and ends up staying there too, adding to the web of encounters.
In this somewhat rundown, by-the-hour establishment, there are two husbands and one wife, plus Maxime, Henri’s nephew, and Boniface’s maid, all entangled in affairs and misunderstandings. The young girls, sensing a spooky atmosphere in their room, chant about witches while waving bedsheets, which frightens Henri and other guests into a temporary belief in the ghost rumors. All these events fuel Feydeau’s creative energy and become the raw material for the play that would go on to become the season’s succès fou.
