What's After the Movie

Peggy Mount

Margaret Rose Mount, known professionally as Peggy Mount, was an English actress whose career spanned more than five decades, from the mid‑1940s to the mid‑1990s. Born on 2 May 1915 in Southend‑on‑Sea, Essex, she grew up in a troubled household and discovered acting as a vital escape, first appearing in school productions before joining local amateur groups. After a brief stint as a secretary, she entered the professional world with a debut in Hindle Wakes in 1944 and spent the next nine years honing her craft in repertory theatres across Britain. Her breakthrough came in 1955 when she originated the role of Emma Hornett in the comedy Sailor Beware! and, after a successful provincial run, was handed the part for the West End, instantly becoming the toast of the town and cementing her reputation for portraying domineering, middle‑aged women. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s she alternated between stage, film and television, appearing in movies such as Dry Rot and Oliver! and TV series including The Larkins and Inn for Trouble. In addition to her comic talent, Mount demonstrated remarkable range, taking on serious roles such as Mother Courage in Bertolt Brecht’s play and delivering powerful performances in television dramas like Trial of Klaus Barbie and an episode of Inspector Morse. Her later years were marked by continued work with the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company and notable radio productions, even as she battled failing eyesight. After going completely blind during a 1996 tour of Uncle Vanya, she retired and spent her final years at Denville Hall, the actors’ retirement home, where she passed away on 13 November 2001. Her legacy endures through a biography Everything I Ever Wanted and the lasting memory of a performer who could command both laughter and respect with equal authority.
