Kiyoshi Kobayashi was a prolific Japanese actor, voice actor, and narrator whose career spanned more than six decades, from his debut in 1958 until his death in 2022. Born on 1933-01-11 in Bunkyō, Tokyo City, Japan, Kobayashi displayed an early talent for English during junior high school and initially aspired to become a writer, a dream that eventually led him to the theater department of Nihon University’s College of Art after a failed attempt to enter the University of Tokyo. Graduating from the arts department, he was instantly captivated by the stage, joining the theater company Izumi‑za where he performed as a stage actor and translated plays such as The Caine Mutiny, which opened the door to his parallel career in Japanese dubbing. His deep, resonant baritone quickly made him a sought‑after dubbing artist, becoming the exclusive Japanese voice of Hollywood legends James Coburn and Lee Marvin, and also providing voice work for Tommy Lee Jones, Jack Palance, and Franco Nero, among many others. Kobayashi’s most iconic role, however, was Daisuke Jigen in the Lupin the Third franchise, a character he voiced for over fifty years—from the pilot in 1969 through the first episode of Part 6 in 2021. The creator Monkey Punch deliberately modeled Jigen after James Coburn, making Kobayashi the natural choice to embody the charismatic, gun‑toting thief, and he remained the only original cast member after numerous cast changes in 2011. Throughout his career, Kobayashi was known for idiosyncratic recording habits, such as forgoing a pop filter and chewing caramel before a session, and for his heavy smoking, which became a legendary anecdote among studio staff. In the 2010s he reduced public smoking, yet studios occasionally granted special permission out of respect for his legacy. He retired from the role of Jigen in 2021, citing age and the 50th‑anniversary milestone, and was succeeded by Akio Otsuka. Kobayashi continued to narrate and appear in various productions until his passing from pneumonia on 2022-07-30, leaving an indelible imprint on Japanese voice acting and dubbing history.
