Biography

Who Is Kazuo Imai?

Kazuo Imai was born in Kawasaki, Japan in 1955 and is 71 years old. Credited on films since 1958, as an actor. The background, training and the roles that shaped the career.

Kazuo Imai (今井 和雄, Imai Kazuo; born September 24, 1955) is a Tokyo-based guitarist renowned for his rigorous and original approach to free improvisation. His distinctive musical style bridges the rigor and textural complexity of contemporary classical music with the passionate intensity of free jazz. Throughout his career, Imai has collaborated with an impressive array of both Western and Japanese improvisers, including notable figures such as Lee Konitz, Barre Phillips, Arthur Doyle, Han Bennink, Irene Schweizer, Shuichi Chino, Tetsu Saitoh, and Kazue Sawai. In addition to his solo performances and collaborative work, he is a key member of the acclaimed collective improvisation group Marginal Consort. Besides his primary instrument of guitar, Imai is also a skilled viola da gamba player, demonstrating his versatility across diverse sonic palettes. Born in Kawasaki in 1955, Imai studied under two of post-war Japan's most influential musical iconoclasts: Takehisa Kosugi and Masayuki Takayanagi. He began studying with Kosugi at the Bigakko art school in 1975, and as part of his graduation project, he participated in the East Bionic Symphonia collective improvisation performance and recording. Kosugi subsequently invited him to join the well-known mixed media group Taj Mahal Travellers, with which he performed from 1975 to 1977. Imai also pursued studies under guitar virtuoso Masayuki Takayanagi, and notably was the only one of Takayanagi's private students to ever complete the program. Imai played with Takayanagi's New Directions group for several months in 1976. Following this period of intensive musical development, Imai withdrew completely from live performance between 1985 and 1991. Upon his return to the stage, he primarily performed as a solo artist in an ongoing series of self-promoted concerts titled Solo Works. From this point forward, he began releasing solo and duo recordings while performing with numerous visiting Western musicians, including Lee Konitz, Barre Phillips, and Arthur Doyle. In 1997, Imai played a pivotal role in reforming East Bionic Symphonia under the new name Marginal Consort, a group that continues to perform one concert each year, preserving his legacy as a pioneer of Japanese improvisational music.
