Junkichi Orimoto (9 February 1927 – 18 March 2019) was a prolific Japanese actor whose career spanned nearly seven decades, making him a recognizable face in both classic post‑war cinema and modern television dramas. Born in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Orimoto began his artistic journey with the Shinkyō theatre company in 1949, where he honed his craft on stage before transitioning to the silver screen. His film debut came in Tadashi Imai’s 1952 drama Yamabiko Gakkō, marking the start of a long list of supporting and character roles that would define his versatility. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he appeared in such notable titles as The Eternal Breasts (1955), Planet Prince (1958) and the acclaimed anti‑war epic The Human Condition Part 1 (1959), often portraying stoic figures, detectives or military officers. A frequent collaborator with directors Kinji Fukasaku and Sadao Nakajima, Orimoto became a staple of the yakuza genre, delivering memorable performances in Battles Without Honor and Humanity series (1974‑1976) and its later revival in 2000. His ability to blend gravitas with subtle humor earned him roles in mainstream hits like The Return of Godzilla (1984) and the internationally praised Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985). In television, he contributed to enduring series such as Kinpachi‑sensei and historical epics like Hideyoshi, where his portrayals of historical figures added depth to the narratives. Even in his nineties, Orimoto remained active, appearing in the 2018 film blank13, his final screen credit before passing away from old age in March 2019 at 92.
