June Louise Squibb, born November 6, 1929, is an accomplished American actress, having made her Broadway debut back in the musical Gypsy in 1959. Her first film reputation was established by the 1990 romantic comedy Alice directed by Woody Allen. She later sustains supporting roles in several movies such as The Age of Innocence (1993), In & Out (1997), Meet Joe Black (1998), About Schmidt (2002), and Far from Heaven (2002). She achieved a pinnacle of recognition for her role in the comedy-drama film Nebraska in 2013, directed by Alexander Payne, where she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also gave memorable performances in animated films like Ralph Breaks the Internet, Toy Story 4, Soul, and Inside Out 2 with her voice acting roles. Her television appearances include recurring roles on Ghost Whisperer, Getting On, Shameless, Good Girls, and Little Voice. Squibb landed her first leading role in the action comedy film Thelma in 2024, at the age of 94.

Squibb was born in Vandalia, Illinois, with a background of a silent film pianist mother, JoyBelle, and an insurance agent father, Lewis. She was married to Edward Sostek in 1953 but divorced in 1959. She then married acting teacher Charles Kakatsakis, and they had a son, Harry, who followed in the footsteps of his parents and became a filmmaker. An interesting fact about Squibb is she converted to Judaism in the 1950s. In the late 50s, she and Charles moved to New York City to pursue her career on Broadway where she replaced Electra for her Broadway debut in the original production of Gypsy. This amazing woman did not only limit herself on films and TV but also performed on road tours, cruise ships, and even played Santa Claus’s helper at Christmas in shopping malls.
