Julie Harris was a towering figure on the American stage, born Julia Ann Harris on December 2, 1925 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. From a young age she displayed a fierce curiosity for performance, attending the Hewitt School in New York and training at the Perry‑Mansfield Performing Arts School before a brief but influential year at the Yale School of Drama. In 1945 she made her Broadway debut, quickly establishing herself as a consummate talent with a debut that led to a cascade of accolades, including five Tony Awards for Best Actress in a Play – a record she still shares with only a few legends. Her early film work featured a breakthrough Academy Award‑nominated turn as Frankie in The Member of the Wedding (1952) and a memorable supporting role opposite James Dean in East of Eden (1955). Harris’s command of method acting—honed as a founding member of Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio—allowed her to inhabit a staggering range of characters, from the fragile Sally Bowles in I Am a Camera to the regal Mary Todd Lincoln in The Last of Mrs. Lincoln.
