Rabbi John Desmond Rayner CBE (30 May 1924 – 19 September 2005) was a Berlin-born British Liberal Jewish rabbi whose life and work profoundly shaped the development of Progressive Judaism in the United Kingdom. Born as Hans Sigismund Rahmer in 1924, he fled Nazi Germany in 1939 aboard one of the last Kindertransports, a programme that rescued approximately 10,000 children to the UK. Tragically, both of his parents, Ferdinand Rahmer and Charlotte Landshut, were murdered in the Holocaust. Between 1943 and 1947, Rayner served in the British Army before taking up an open scholarship at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, which he had won five years earlier. He graduated in 1950 with First Class Honours in Moral Science, having initially enrolled in modern languages. His academic interests included Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac and Semitic Epigraphy, and he later worked on a research thesis about Maimonides' conception of Revelation. Rayner was ordained in the Liberal Jewish ministry on 21 June 1953 and began his rabbinical career at the South London Liberal Synagogue in Streatham, where he served until 1957. He then moved to St John's Wood Liberal Synagogue before accepting a graduate fellowship at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1963. Returning to the UK in June 1965, he became Minister at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue, where he would make his most enduring mark. Working alongside American Rabbi Chaim Stern, Rayner served as the main liturgist of British Liberal Judaism, co-editing several influential prayer books including Service of the Heart, Gates of Repentance, and Siddur Lev Chadash. He also taught liturgy at Leo Baeck College in London and authored numerous books on topics ranging from halakha and ethics to Jewish-Christian relations and Zionism. Beyond his scholarly and liturgical contributions, Rayner was celebrated as one of Britain's finest preachers, being voted among the best in Britain by Harpers and Queen magazine in 1976, and he made frequent appearances on national television and radio during the late 1960s and 1970s. His commitment to interfaith dialogue led him to serve as co-chairman of the London Society of Christians and Jews, an effort that earned him a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1993. His theological thought consistently stressed the centrality of ethics and advocated for a more halakhic approach to Progressive Judaism. In his personal life, Rayner married Jane Heilbronn in 1955, with whom he had two sons and a daughter. He passed away on 19 September 2005 at his home in London after a long illness, leaving behind a remarkable legacy as both a spiritual leader and an influential thinker in modern Jewish life.
