John Phillip Law: Movies & Box Office

John Phillip Law (September 7, 1937 – May 13, 2008) was an American film and television actor. His acting career was marked by a variety of both Hollywood and European films, stretching from his breakthrough in 1966 up to his last film in 2008. Early in his acting career, Law achieved recognition for roles in films such as The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966) and Death Rides a Horse (1967). His fame escalated with his portrayals in Barbarella (1968), Danger: Diabolik (1968), and Von Richthofen and Brown (1971). Law's most notable role is that of Sinbad in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973), a film that was not only a global box office hit but also the recipient of the first Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film.

In the early years, Law was born in Hollywood, California. Starting off as an engineering student, he eventually transitioned to studying psychology and drama at the University of Hawaii. Post-college, Law worked at the Repertory Theater at Lincoln Center, and later moved to Europe where he found success in numerous films. Despite the offers for roles in Midnight Cowboy and Easy Rider, Law chose to work in diverse roles throughout the decades, including The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Open Season, and The Spiral Staircase. In his later career, Law continued to act, appearing in films into the 2000s such as CQ (2001), Curse of the Forty-Niner (2002), and Ray of Sunshine (2006). The final film credit to his name was in Chinaman's Chance (2008).
