John Nicholas Cassavetes (December 9, 1929 – February 3, 1989) was a significant figure in American cinema, known for pioneering the independent film movement. Starting his career as an actor in film and television, Cassavetes later made his mark as a gifted writer and director, often self-funding, producing, and distributing his own projects. His exceptional work led to nominations for three Academy Awards, two BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and an Emmy Award. He played a pivotal role in NBC detective series Johnny Staccato and was seen in notable films such as Edge of the City, The Dirty Dozen, Rosemary's Baby, and Mikey and Nicky. His distinctive directorial works include Shadows, Faces, Husbands, A Woman Under the Influence, Opening Night, and Love Streams. His films, known for their improvisational aesthetic and cinéma vérité feel, centered on raw character relationships and 'small feelings', rejecting conventional Hollywood storytelling and stylization.
