Crime in the Streets 1956

On the gritty streets of New York City, a violent rumble between the Hornets and the Dukes ends with a youth seized and threatened with a zip gun by Lenny Daniels. A vigilant neighbor, Mr. McAllister, witnesses the incident and immediately alerts the police, setting off a chain of consequences that will ripple through a tight-knit neighborhood.

Lenny is arrested and sentenced to a year in jail, and the Hornets’ flame of vengeance is fanned into a burning resolve. The gang’s leader, Frankie Dane, determined to even the score, refuses to be swayed by the attempts of a social worker, Ben Wagner, or by his worried mother, Mrs. Dane, who has watched him drift further from guidance and care.

In a bid for retaliation, Frankie pulls together a small circle: Lou Macklin and Angelo “Baby” Gioia, tasking them with a plan to kill McAllister. The gravity of the plot unsettles Frankie’s younger brother, Richie Dane, who overhears the dangerous scheme and senses the danger it poses to their family and community.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gioia, Baby’s father, tries to clamp down on his son’s association with Frankie, slamming the door on participation in violence and urging him to choose a different path. Wagner continues his steady, hopeful approach to the boys, striving to understand their motives rather than simply condemn their behavior, while Richie’s close account to the social worker reveals the depth of Frankie’s plan to commit a murder.

As night falls, the conspirators prepare themselves, using sleep as a cover to lend their alibi weight and waiting for the moment to strike. McAllister is lured into an alley at 1:30 in the morning, the setup echoing the earlier danger that began with the zip gun and a neighbor’s alarm. Richie acts to intervene, stopping his brother just in time, but Frankie’s anger flares and he clutches the knife to Richie’s throat as the other two fugitives flee, their shouts drawing the victim’s pleas for help.

Wagner arrives amid the commotion and bears witness to the moment Frankie begins to disengage, gradually coming to a realization that violence isn’t the only answer. With Frankie calming down, Wagner takes him toward the approaching police, the weight of the neighborhood’s fear easing as the tangible threat is finally confronted and the day’s violence begins to wind down.
