After a tense street confrontation in New York between the Hornets and the Dukes, a young youth is seized and menaced with a zip gun by Lenny Daniels, one of the Hornets. The shocking act is witnessed by a neighbor, McAllister, who promptly informs the police, setting the wheels in motion for a pursuit that will test loyalties and courage alike.

Lenny is arrested and given a year in jail, and the Hornets’ young leader, Frankie Dane, resolves to exact payback. Frankie Dane, an 18-year-old whose reputation seems beyond reform, resists every attempt to reach him through social worker Ben Wagner or his worried mother, Mrs. Dane, who was abandoned by Frankie’s father when he was eight. The grip of anger and bravado tightens around him as he spirals toward violence.

When Frankie warns McAllister with a bluster that belies a deeper fear, McAllister remains unfazed. He even slaps Frankie, who recoils before retreating, but the threat does not die there. In a moment of chilling calculation, Frankie ropes in his confidants, Lou Macklin and Baby Gioia, to help murder the man who dared to stand up to him. The plan fills Frankie with a reckless certainty that unsettles his younger brother, 10-year-old Richie, who overhears the deadly scheme and fears for his life as well as his family’s fragile safety.

Baby Gioia finds himself pulled deeper into trouble as his father, Mr. Gioia, rails against the company his son keeps, even slapping him in a desperate attempt to pull him away from Frankie’s orbit. The tension between duty and desire to belong presses hard on everyone involved. Wagner, trying to see past the surface of these troubled youths, speaks with Frankie in a bid to understand where this violence is rooted, but the talk seems to go nowhere, leaving the future uncertain and heavy with consequences.

Richie, driven by a mix of loyalty and dread, ultimately confides details of Frankie’s plan to Wagner, who recognizes the danger before it fully unfolds. The conspirators prepare their alibi and slip into bed, awaiting the appointed time to strike. In the darkness of the alley, McAllister’s nightmare comes true as Frankie, Lou, and Baby corner their target at 1:30 in the morning. Richie, acting from a place of mixed concern and courage, tries to intervene, and for a brief moment, a knife is pressed to his throat as Frankie’s anger flares and the others scatter.

Wagner arrives amid the commotion, his presence a calm counterpoint to the chaos. He watches as Frankie, suddenly uneasy with the consequences of violence, loosens his grip on Richie and, with a wary glance toward the approaching police, allows his brother to live. The night ends with an uneasy, hard-won restraint as Frankie and Wagner move toward the sirens, leaving the story at a precipice where choices will define each of their fates.
