Jean Seberg was an American actress whose career spanned the late 1950s to the late 1970s, and she remains a cultural icon of the French New Wave. Born Jean Dorothy Seberg on 13 November 1938 in Marshalltown, Iowa, she was the daughter of a substitute teacher and a pharmacist and grew up in a Lutheran family of Swedish, English and German ancestry. After a brief study of dramatic arts at the University of Iowa, she was catapulted into Hollywood when Otto Preminger selected her from 18,000 candidates for the title role in Saint Joan (1957), a decision that generated massive publicity but also harsh critical reception. Despite the early setbacks, Seberg persisted, appearing in Preminger’s Bonjour Tristesse (1958) and earning a long‑term contract with Columbia Pictures, where she found commercial success in The Mouse That Roared (1959). Her breakthrough came in 1960 when she starred as the cool, enigmatic Patricia opposite Jean‑Paul Belmondo in Jean‑Luc Godard’s Breathless, a film that cemented her status as a symbol of youthful rebellion and earned praise from François Truffaut, who called her “the best actress in Europe.” Throughout the 1960s she alternated between French and American productions, delivering notable performances in Lilith (1964), Paint Your Wagon (1969) and the disaster epic Airport (1970). Her personal life was turbulent; she married three times—to François Moreuil (1958‑1960), writer Romain Gary (1962‑1970) and director Dennis Berry (1972‑1979)—and had two children, including a son, Alexandre Diego Gary, and a daughter who died shortly after birth. Seberg’s activism for civil‑rights causes, particularly her financial support for the Black Panther Party, made her a target of the FBI’s COINTELPRO program, which spread false rumors about her personal life and contributed to a prolonged campaign of harassment. The psychological toll of the smear campaign, combined with professional setbacks and personal tragedy, culminated in her death on 30 August 1979 in Paris, ruled a probable suicide. Today she is remembered not only for her cinematic legacy but also for the tragic intersection of fame, politics, and personal vulnerability.
