James McArdle: Movies & Box Office

James John McArdle (born 3 April 1989) is a Scottish actor renowned for his versatile stage work and emerging film presence. Born in Glasgow's Darnley neighbourhood, he attended St Ninian's High School in Giffnock and began performing with the PACE Theatre Company in nearby Paisley, where he gained early experience as a child actor in film. At the age of seventeen, driven by a desire to hone his craft, he independently travelled to London and secured a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, impressing selectors despite a shaky audition. He left RADA near the end of his studies in 2010 and immediately broke onto the professional scene, appearing in a Globe production of Macbeth and starring in Anya Reiss’s Spur of the Moment at the Royal Court, followed by a praised turn in A Month in the Country at Chichester Festival Theatre. Since then, McArdle has built an impressive résumé that spans the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the West End. Highlights include portraying Agathon in Henrik Ibsen’s Emperor and Galilean (2011), Robin Hood in Ella Hickson’s adaptation The Legend (2011), and Harold Abrahams in Mike Bartlett’s Chariots of Fire (2012‑13). His 2015 performance as Mikhail Platonov earned him the prestigious Ian Charleson Award, and his 2017 turn as Louis Ironson in Angels in America garnered an Olivier nomination and a Drama Desk nod after the production transferred to Broadway. More recently, he headlined the 2024 comedy Four Mothers, an Irish‑set adaptation of Mid‑August Lunch, which captured the BFI London Film Festival Audience Award.
