J. Lee Thompson was an accomplished English film director, screenwriter, and producer born on August 1, 1914 in Bristol, England. He was initially known for his realistic works on social issues, and later mustered acclaim for his mastery over diverse genres like thrillers, action, and adventure films. His most critically acclaimed and commercially successful productions include 'Woman in a Dressing Gown' (1957), 'Ice Cold in Alex' (1958), 'Tiger Bay' (1959), 'North West Frontier' (1959), 'The Guns of Navarone' (1961), 'Cape Fear' (1962), and 'Mackenna's Gold' (1969). Aside from mainstream hits, he also directed popular cult classics—Planet of the Apes sequels, 'The White Buffalo'(1977), 'Happy Birthday to Me' (1981), 'King Solomon's Mines' (1985), and several Charles Bronson vehicles in the 1980s. Thompson's repertoire made him a nominee for an Academy Award and four BAFTA Awards amongst other prestigious nods.

Thompson began his career in theatre, joining a repertory company as an actor and stagehand. He showed an early interest in writing and had developed an impressive catalog of plays by his early 20s, some of which were successfully performed. Thompson's transition into film saw him initially making an appearance in films and being credited for film scripts. His time as a RAF tailgunner and wireless operator during World War II influenced many of his films. After the war, Thompson returned to scriptwriting and ultimately began his directorial journey. As he advanced in his career, he came to be known for his direct, efficient and non-conventional approach to directing, leading to successful collaborations with notable stars such as Charles Bronson.
