Jim Preston, Anthony Quayle and Amy Preston, Yvonne Mitchell, live with their teenage son Brian, Andrew Ray, in a small, crowded London flat on a bustling housing estate. On a Sunday morning, Amy lovingly prepares Jim’s cooked breakfast, but he reveals that he’s got to go to work. What seems like a routine start soon reveals the simmering tensions beneath the surface of this seemingly ordinary family.

Amy is a warm, affectionate presence, yet she struggles with organization and focus, often letting domestic duties slip. Jim’s life, meanwhile, is shadowed by an affair with a colleague, Georgie, Sylvia Syms Harlow, who presses him to leave his wife and child if he wants to be with her. She makes it clear that she won’t wait forever: Jim promises to end the marriage and eventually asks for a divorce, a vow that unsettles Amy and anchors the film’s central conflict.

Driven by a mix of hope and desperation, Amy resolves to improve herself. She borrows ten shillings from Brian, who is just starting out in his first job, and pawns her engagement ring for three pounds in a bid to reshape their life. With a renewed sense of purpose, she treats Jim to a hair appointment and buys a small bottle of whisky for him, hoping to create a moment of reconciliation. But rain ruins her carefully planned look, and she returns home looking less composed than ever. She wrestles with misfortune: she pulls on a best dress only to rip it, and a neighbor’s arrival leads to a quiet, perilous evening of drinking that ends with Amy sabotaging the table.

Brian discovers his mother’s intoxication and grows furious when Jim arrives home with Georgie in tow. In a tense clash, Jim slaps his son, and Brian leaves the flat to escape the heated scene. The atmosphere thickens as confrontation looms: Amy orders Jim and Georgie to leave, and Jim exits, only to reconsider his choices and return to his wife.
