Ineko Arima, born Moriko Nakanishi on 3 April 1932 in Ikeda, Osaka, Japan, is one of Japan’s most enduring and versatile performers. Her career began in the immediate post‑war era when she debuted on stage in 1949, swiftly transitioning to the silver screen where she became a familiar face in the golden age of Japanese cinema. Over the decades she has worked with legendary directors such as Yasujirō Ozu, Mikio Naruse, and Kon Ichikawa, delivering nuanced performances that balanced restraint with emotional depth, earning her a reputation as a consummate character actress. Arima’s collaborations with Ozu in Late Autumn and Floating Clouds showcased her ability to embody quiet dignity, while her work with Naruse in When a Woman Ascends the Stairs highlighted her skill in portraying complex, often marginalized, women.
