Late Chrysanthemums 1954

Late Chrysanthemums follows four retired geisha—Kin, Tamae, Tomi and Nobu—as their lives intertwine over four successive days. The film paints a quiet, patient portrait of aging, debt, loyalty, and memory within a close-knit circle. Kin, a merciless moneylender, keeps a tight watch on repayments and is determined to extract what she is owed from her former sisters. Her financial advisor Itaya wields practical counsel, pressing her to consider investment in land on the countryside, arguing that rising prices will safeguard their futures and perhaps reshuffle their dependencies.

Tamae and Tomi, though both widowed, share a sheltering arrangement that keeps their spirits tethered to one another as time slips by. Tamae is hobbled by migraines, which limit her capacity to work as a hotel maid, creating a fragile rhythm of days and scarce earnings. She also frets over her son, Kiyoshi, and his relationship with an older mistress who pays him for his companionship, a dynamic that gnaws at her sense of family. Tomi battles a web of debts and gambling that constrains her choices and colors every decision she makes. She can’t easily reverse the toll of her habit, and her worry grows as Sachiko, her daughter, faces an arranged marriage to a much older man, a union she both laments and fights against. In contrast, Nobu runs a restaurant with her husband, creating a social space that the other women frequent, a kind of informal refuge where news, gossip, and small power plays move through the tables.

Seki, a former client of Kin, has his own fraught history with the moneylender—he was imprisoned after an attempt on Kin’s life and a suicide attempt—yet he reappears, trying to borrow again, only to be dismissed. Kin, meanwhile, stirs with a mix of calculation and lingering excitement when she learns that ex-soldier Tabe, a former patron and lover, is returning. He, too, approaches Kin with a request for money, and his hesitations reveal the continuing ties—and tensions—that bind them. Kin refuses his plea and, in a moment that crystallizes their complicated past, burns his photograph to erase the final vestiges of what they once shared.

As the days unfold, the four women face changing company around them. Tamae and Tomi are left to themselves when Kiyoshi leaves for Hokkaido for work and Sachiko moves in with her future husband, altering the household’s balance. Kin later learns from Nobu that Seki has been arrested again for a money-related crime, a fact she shrugs off as if it were merely another ripple in a sea of debts and disputes. With these signals circulating, Kin steps onto a train with Itaya, intending to survey countryside plots she might buy, a quiet, businesslike departure that suggests both a retreat and a possible renewal of her fortunes.
