Ineko Arima

Ineko Arima, born Moriko Nakanishi on 3 April 1932 in Ikeda, Osaka, Japan, is one of Japan’s most enduring and versatile performers. Her career began in the immediate post‑war era when she debuted on stage in 1949, swiftly transitioning to the silver screen where she became a familiar face in the golden age of Japanese cinema. Over the decades she has worked with legendary directors such as Yasujirō Ozu, Mikio Naruse, and Kon Ichikawa, delivering nuanced performances that balanced restraint with emotional depth, earning her a reputation as a consummate character actress. Arima’s collaborations with Ozu in Late Autumn and Floating Clouds showcased her ability to embody quiet dignity, while her work with Naruse in When a Woman Ascends the Stairs highlighted her skill in portraying complex, often marginalized, women. In the 1960s she expanded into television, appearing in numerous drama series that brought her talent into Japanese households and solidified her status as a cultural icon. Her longevity is marked not only by the volume of her work but also by the accolades she has received, including the prestigious Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1995 and the Order of the Precious Crown, 4th Class, Wisteria in 2003, honors that recognize her contributions to the arts and society. Beyond her professional achievements, Arima’s personal life has been marked by two notable marriages: to the celebrated kabuki actor Nakamura Kinnosuke from 1961 to 1965, and later to film producer Saburō Kawamura until his death in 1983.
