Gene Barry (born Eugene Klass, June 14, 1919 – December 9, 2009) was an American stage, screen, and television actor and singer whose career spanned more than six decades, making him a recognizable face of mid‑century popular entertainment. Born in New York City to Eva (née Conn) and Martin Klass, both children of Latvian and Polish Jewish immigrants, Barry displayed musical talent early, learning violin and earning a scholarship to the Chatham Square School of Music for his vocal abilities before turning to acting. He adopted the stage name Gene Barry in homage to John Barrymore and made his Broadway debut in 1942 as Captain Paul Duval in the revival of The New Moon, followed by a string of musical roles that showcased his suave delivery and polished presence. Barry entered film with a leading role as Dr. Frank Addison in The Atomic City (1952) and cemented his sci‑fi fame as Dr. Clayton Forrester in the classic The War of the Worlds (1953), a performance later echoed by a cameo in Spielberg’s 2005 remake. Television proved his most enduring medium: he first appeared on the NBC Television Opera Theatre in 1950, then won audience affection as the dashing educator Gene Talbot on Our Miss Brooks, a role that foreshadowed his later success as the charismatic lawman Bat Masterson (1958‑1961) and the impeccably dressed detective Amos Burke on Burke’s Law (1963‑1965), for which he earned a Golden Globe for Best Actor in 1965. Barry continued to reinvent himself in series such as The Name of the Game (1968‑1971) and made a notable return to the revived Burke’s Law in the 1990s, while also appearing on Broadway in La Cage aux Folles, earning a Tony nomination for his portrayal of Georges. Off‑screen he married actress Betty Claire Kalb (stage name Julie Carson) in 1944; the couple raised three children before Kalb’s death in 2003. Gene Barry died peacefully on December 9, 2009, at a senior residence in Woodland Hills, California, and was interred beside his wife at Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City, leaving behind a legacy of elegance, versatility, and a timeless imprint on American popular culture.
