Jane Hoyt, Susan Hayward arrives in Hong Kong, looking for her husband, the reckless photojournalist Louis Hoyt, Gene Barry, who vanished after entering Communist China without a visa and was imprisoned as a suspected spy. His disappearance unsettles the city’s quiet undercurrents, and Jane’s determined search begins to pull in figures from both legitimate and illicit worlds.
Her search leads to Hong Kong Marine Police Inspector Merryweather, Michael Rennie, who found Hoyt’s cameras on the junk that carried him into China, but he can offer little help beyond a practical warning. The clues point toward someone who operates in the shadows, a man who never shies away from risk or trouble.
During their conversation, Merryweather mentions American expatriate Hank Lee, Clark Gable, a big name in smuggling and other shady activities. The name itself seems to loom over the case, suggesting that the escape and rescue Jane seeks may hinge on crossing a line she never intended to cross.
Determined, Jane contacts Hank Lee, and he bluntly advises her to give up the foolhardy venture. Yet she refuses, propelled by a stubborn resolve that refuses to yield to fear. To push the plan forward, she meets Fernand Rocha, Mel Welles, and deposits $500 to set up a rescue, hoping for a clean, decisive turnaround. Rocha, however, gambles away the money and uses the moment to trap her for his lecherous purposes, threatening to derail everything unless Hank acts quickly.
Word reaches Hank in time, and he arrives just as Jane’s peril peaks, pulling her from a dangerous situation and signaling the beginning of a perilous alliance. Having fallen in love with Jane and realizing that she will not let herself be dragged into danger while Louis’s fate remains uncertain, Hank decides to take on the rescue himself. The stakes rise as Merryweather, who has been quietly watching Hank’s plans unfold, is swept into the operation, adding a layer of official tension to the mission.
Inspector Merryweather is inspecting Hank’s boat when Hank makes his move and is shanghaied into helping rescue the husband, who is being held in prison in Canton. The unexpected cooperation between law and an outlaw marks a tense, high-stakes break in the case, as allies from different worlds must work together to free Louis Hoyt.
Louis is freed. The return to safety marks a hard-won victory, but it also shifts the balance of hearts involved in the mission. When they return safely to Hong Kong, Louis graciously bows out of his wife’s life, allowing Hank and Jane to come together at last, their bond formed in danger, loyalty, and an uneasy peace between duty and desire.
