Gary Hershberger (born April 5, 1964) is an American actor and screenwriter whose career spans more than three decades, beginning in the mid‑1980s and continuing to the present day. Raised in Inglewood, California, he pursued higher education at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied history and communication from 1982 to 1986, laying a foundation for his later work in both performance and writing. He first gained widespread recognition for his role as Mike Nelson in the cult classic television series Twin Peaks (1989–1991) and reprised the character in the 2017 revival Twin Peaks: The Return, cementing his place in television history. In addition to his iconic Twin Peaks appearances, Hershberger delivered memorable performances on Six Feet Under as Matthew Gilardi, and appeared in a variety of popular series such as Grey’s Anatomy, The West Wing, Murder, She Wrote, Columbo, The O.C., and Knight Rider, showcasing his versatility across genres. His filmography includes supporting and starring roles in titles like Paradise Motel, Free Ride, Beverly Hills Madam, The Siege of Firebase Gloria, Deep Core, and the IMAX documentary Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D. As a screenwriter, he co‑wrote the TV movie Python and authored the upcoming feature Late in the Season, which also marks his directorial debut; his writing has earned a PAGE International Screenwriting Award and several finalist honors. Together with fellow Twin Peaks alum Sheryl Lee, he co‑founded the Actor’s Director Workshop, teaching at institutions such as USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, and Loyola Marymount, and mentoring the next generation of talent.
