Bernice ‘Bernie’ Rhodenbarr, a former San Francisco burglar, tries to rebuild her life, but a corrupt police officer named Ray Kirschman pulls her back into crime to keep him happy. The pressure tightens when a dentist named Dr. Cynthia Sheldrake hires Bernice to break into her ex-husband’s home and retrieve her jewelry, hoping to settle old scores without leaving a trace. Bernice reluctantly agrees, lured by the promise of money and the chance to move past a life that once defined her.
The job goes wrong in a devastating way: Christopher, Bernice’s target, is murdered in the course of the burglary. Because of Dr. Sheldrake’s involvement and her lawyer, Carson Verrill, Bernice finds herself cast as the primary suspect in a case that quickly spirals out of control. The legal web tightens around her, and she becomes a wig-wearing suspect in a crime she swore she didn’t commit. Her only path to exoneration lies in the truth, not in running away from the inevitable.
Determined to clear her name, Bernice teams up with her loyal friend Carl Hefler and they bounce from bar to bar, chasing long shots and skimpy leads in search of anyone who might have known Christopher. Their undercover sleuthing reveals a complicated web: Christopher had many attachments, both girlfriends and boyfriends, hinting at a social circle large enough to hide a killer. As they sift through stories and alibis, three new suspects emerge after an old flame points them toward an artist, a bartender, and a mysterious man known only by his nickname: > Heeeeeeere’s Johnny!
Their pursuit of the two obvious leads—the artist and the bartender—soon turns deadly. Each encounter ends with the shocking and unmapped deaths of the very people they hoped would unlock the truth, leaving Bernice with dwindling clues and fewer witnesses to lean on. The case grows colder with every passing hour, forcing Bernice to rely on her instincts and the fragile edges of guilt and motive that tie Christopher to the people around him.
When Bernice finally confronts Dr. Sheldrake in a tense, confrontational exchange at her home, the doctor’s secrets begin to spill. Bernice pieces together fragments of the night of Christopher’s death and realizes that Sheldrake herself slept with Christopher—the night he was murdered—altering the entire frame of the case. The confrontation culminates in a shift of perspective, as a televised moment underscores the tangled loyalties that bind the players.
A key moment unfolds as Bernice gets a flash of recognition: the connection between Carson Verrill and Christopher, and the way love and betrayal intersect in a murder investigation. A plan forms as Bernice decides to lure Carson out with the very jewelry she was commissioned to steal, intending to force a confession or a revelation that could break the case open. She calls Carson to meet in the park, carrying the bag of jewelry, and the meeting becomes a turning point in the investigation.
In the park, the truth tightens like a noose. Bernice, with the help of her close ally Carl and the steady presence of [Ray Kirschman], corners Carson Verrill. The confrontation exposes long-buried pressures, jealousies, and a motive that ties all the players together in a fatal knot. The trio brings the evidence to a head, capturing Carson and bringing the threads of Christopher’s death into clearer focus. The case is resolved not by a sudden reveal on a courtroom stage but through a tense, methodical unravelling among trusted allies and enemies alike.
