Sir Elton John, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on 25 March 1947 in Pinner, Middlesex, England, is a British singer, songwriter and pianist whose career has spanned six decades. He began piano lessons at age seven, won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at eleven, and left school at seventeen to pursue music. In the early 1960s he played in the blues band Bluesology and worked as a session musician before forming the songwriting partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin, a collaboration that produced classics such as ‘Your Song’, ‘Rocket Man’, and ‘Candle in the Wind.’ His debut album Empty Sky (1969) was followed by a string of chart‑topping releases including Honky Château (1972), Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973) and The Lion King soundtrack (1994), which earned him his first Academy Award. Over his career John has sold more than 300 million records, earned an EGOT, and received five Grammys, two Oscars, a Tony, and two Golden Globes. His farewell tour Farewell Yellow Brick Road (2018‑2023) became the highest‑grossing concert tour ever at the time, demonstrating his enduring global appeal. Beyond music, John is a prominent philanthropist, founding the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992, which has raised over £300 million for HIV/AIDS programs worldwide.
