Growing up above a mortuary, he developed an early fascination with extreme sports, becoming an accomplished skateboarder by the age of twelve and later a professional snowboarder—a career that left him with a broken neck, shoulder, and knees. While working at a skate shop in Portland, his penchant for filming daring tricks caught the eye of the creators of Jackass, launching a career that has spanned over two decades.
