John Nicholas Foran, better known by his stage name Dick Foran, was a prolific American actor and singer whose career spanned over three decades of Hollywood history. Born on June 18, 1910 in Flemington, New Jersey, he was the eldest of five sons to Arthur F. Foran, a Republican state senator, and Elizabeth Foran, and grew up in a family that valued public service and education. After excelling at Mercersburg Academy and the Hun School, Foran pursued a geology degree at Princeton University, where his involvement in football and the arts sparked a lifelong passion for performance. He honed his vocal talents at the Leibling Studio in New York before becoming a popular radio vocalist known as Nick Foran, leading his own orchestra and recording several hits that caught the attention of film studios. In 1934 he signed a contract with Fox, appearing as a supporting singer‑actor in films like Change of Heart, but it was his move to Warner Bros. in 1935 that transformed him into a celebrated “singing cowboy,” starring in titles such as Moonlight on the Prairie, Song of the Saddle, and Guns of the Pecos. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s he seamlessly transitioned between musical westerns and serious dramas, sharing the screen with luminaries like Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, and James Cagney in classics such as The Petrified Forest and The Sisters. After joining Universal Studios, Foran broadened his repertoire further, appearing in comedies (My Little Chickadee), horror (The Mummy’s Hand and its sequel), and serials (Winners of the West). His later years saw a shift to the stage and television, where he headlined the Broadway musical A Connecticut Yankee and guest‑starred on popular series including Perry Mason, Maverick, and The Swamp Fox. Foran’s final film roles came in the 1960s, notably as the prospector “Old Timer” in Brighty of the Grand Canyon, capping a diverse and enduring legacy that earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to television. He passed away on August 10, 1979 in Panorama City, California, leaving behind a rich body of work that continues to be celebrated by classic film enthusiasts.
