In Bitter Creek, a harsh range war grips the valley as cattle rustlers strike with brutal efficiency. Charles “Chip” Douglas steps into the sheriff’s badge after his father is killed, vowing to protect the ranchers and deliver justice to those who threaten their livelihoods. At the same time, Louise Turner — the daughter of the town’s saloon owner — finds herself drawn to Chip’s steadfast courage even as the danger lurking in Bitter Creek grows.
The rustlers press on, and Chip is ambushed and taken captive by the gang led by Tascosa. His capture becomes a crucible for the young lawman, who refuses to give in to fear while the town braces for more violence.
Two unlikely allies step in to tilt the balance: Dave Massey and Bandy Malarkey manage to free Chip and urge him to return to Bitter Creek to raise a posse, rallying the ranchers to the cause of law and order.
Back in the saddle, Chip tracks down the heart of the rustling operation and uncovers a tense deal between Slade Henaberry and Tascosa to buy the stolen cattle. A brutal confrontation follows, and Henaberry is killed, but Tascosa manages to slip away, leaving Chip to pursue the scarred landscape and the man who leads the gang.
The chase intensifies as the rustlers’ gunmen slow Chip at every turn, but the arrival of the posse sparks a full-on gunfight. Though Tascosa rides free again, Chip closes the net, arrests him, and learns the cattle are hidden in Hidden Valley. With the crisis resolved, Chip and Louise ride off on Chip’s horse, and he honors the moment with a stirring rendition of “The Prairie Is My Home.”
