Claud Allister, born William Claud Michael Palmer on 3 October 1888 in London, England, was a prolific English actor whose career spanned both the British stage and Hollywood cinema. Educated at Felsted School in Essex, he initially entered the world of finance as a clerk for a City of London stockbroker, but the lure of the footlights proved stronger, prompting his theatrical debut in 1910. After honing his craft in England’s repertory theatres, his trajectory was interrupted by the outbreak of World I, during which he served as a sub‑altern with the Suffolk Regiment and later the Machine Gun Corps, gaining experiences that would later inform his on‑stage presence. Upon demobilisation, Allister returned to the West End, earning notice in productions such as Bulldog Drummond before crossing the Atlantic in 1924 to pursue opportunities on the American stage. His transition to film came in 1929 with a supporting role in The Trial of Mary Dugan, and over the next two and a half decades he amassed more than seventy screen credits, often playing aristocratic or comedic characters like the effete Lord 'Spóofy' Brockton in Three Live Ghosts (1936) or the dignified Sir Aubrey in Dracula’s Daughter (1936). His distinctive British mannerisms made him a favorite for Hollywood productions seeking a touch of upper‑class humor, and he appeared alongside stars such as George Raft, William Pryor, and Katharine Hepburn. Despite a busy film schedule, Allister maintained ties to the theatre, returning to London stages in the mid‑1930s for productions like Mary Read.
