Helen Leonard, Helen Westley, has a beautiful voice, and as she grows she trains to become an opera singer. Her instructor explains that the voice is enchanting, but not suited for grand opera. Returning home one day with her grandmother, they are saved by a handsome young newspaperman, Alexander Moore [Henry Fonda]. Meanwhile, Helen’s mother Cynthia Leonard Dorothy Peterson pursues political dreams, yet her bid for mayor ends with only a handful of votes.

One evening, while she performs, Helen is heard by vaudeville impresario Tony Pastor, who hires her to sing at his theater. Under the spotlight, she is given a new name, Lillian Russell Alice Faye, and she rises rapidly to become the toast of New York. Over the years, Lillian earns admiration as one of the era’s most revered stars, with a string of suitors including financier Diamond Jim Brady Edward Arnold, Jesse Lewisohn Warren William, and the composer Edward Solomon Don Ameche.

She eventually marries Edward Solomon [Don Ameche], and the couple moves to London, where Gilbert and Sullivan are crafting an operetta especially for her, with Arthur Sullivan Claud Allister contributing to the collaboration. Meanwhile, Alexander Moore [Henry Fonda] returns and secures a contract to tell stories about Lillian’s ascent to stardom, bridging the worlds of press and performance.

Tragedy interrupts the ascent when Edward dies one evening while finishing a song for her. Grief confronts the stage as Lillian cancels interview commitments, then reappears in the show performing the very tune he wrote for her, Blue Love Bird. After returning to America, she becomes the century’s greatest stage attraction, captivating audiences anew and drawing the attention of critics and fans alike. Alexander comes to see her after a new show, and the two are happily reunited, their bond enduring through the public triumphs and personal losses.

The film freely reinterprets history, notably reducing her real-life marriages from four to two, and painting a vivid, romantic portrait of a performer whose voice and charisma defined an era. The liberties are presented in a way that underscores the era’s glossy glamour, the relentless pace of show business, and the personal costs that often accompanied fame.
