In the 1840s, Captain Michael Fury, Brian Aherne, an Irish patriot, is shipped to New South Wales as punishment for his political activities. He becomes a servant to the cruel landowner Arnold Trist, George Zucco, whose harsh discipline relies on whipping to keep order. Fury is not alone in his hardship: he shares the voyage and the bleak outback with fellow convicts Blackie, Victor McLaglen; Coughy, John Carradine; and Bertie Green, Will Stanton. Together they navigate a harsh world where loyalty and grit count for more than civility.

Fury escapes from prison and crosses paths with Jeannette Dupré, June Lang, the daughter of the stern Mennonite landowner François Dupre. Fury discovers that Trist is bent on driving settlers from their land to seize it for himself, igniting a cause that could unite the scattered settlers. He begins to organize them, rallying their resolve and planning resistance. To bolster the effort, Fury makes a dangerous move by returning to prison to recruit more convicts who can stand against Trist’s armed forces.

The struggle heats up when Trist’s men attack the Bailey ranch, threatening the families who farm the land. Fury, aided by Blackie, Coughy, and Bertie, stands with the settlers to push back against the assault. Jeanette finds herself drawn to Fury, a romance that complicates the alliance as her father forbids the match, testing loyalties on both sides. In a tense turn, Dupre reveals to Trist where Fury can be found, prompting a ruthless double cross that leads to Dupre’s imprisonment and a perilous series of ambushes.

Dupre’s house burns to the ground, and a charred body is found among the ruins, a blow that lands Fury in prison and on death row for Dupre’s murder. Yet hope survives in the form of Blackie, who hears Dupre calling from his cell, frees him, and brings him before the Governor, Lawrence Grossmith, to testify. With Dupre spared and exposed, Trist’s grip on the region weakens, but he makes one last bid to flee, only to be felled by a dying Coughy. In the wake of these confrontations, Fury earns a pardon from the Governor, who also places Blackie and Bertie in Fury’s custody, sealing a fragile victory for those who dared to resist. Through danger, hope, and the bonds formed among outcasts, the community’s resilience shines as they weather the storm of oppression and betrayal.
