His association with director Michael Mann in films like The Insider (1999), Ali (2001), and Collateral (2004) is noteworthy. He has extensively exhibited his versatility with roles in John Landis's Animal House, My Cousin Vinny, and Ride Along, along with TV shows like MacGyver and Rizzoli & Isles. He also voiced Lloyd Waterman in The Cleveland Show and had a recurring role in The Crew on Netflix in 2021.

The son of artist Adriel "Squeaky" Rose, of Jewish heritage, and Woodrow Wilson McGill, a real estate and insurance agent, McGill was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. Graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with a degree in drama, McGill's journey into acting began with significant roles in films like National Lampoon's Animal House. His unique talent of finger-drumming on his windpipe featured in both, Animal House and MacGyver. His TV roles included guest appearances in Quantum Leap, Walker, Texas Ranger, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Crime Story, Miami Vice, and Star Trek: Voyager. He also featured as Major Ed Ryan in the Hugo Award-winning Babylon 5 episode "Severed Dreams". Lightening up his portfolio, he made a recurring appearance as Lloyd Waterman in The Cleveland Show, diluting serious roles with a touch of eccentricity. LAstly, he also starred as a decorated Vietnam War veteran in the television series NCIS, narrated for the Fox News documentary series Scandalous, and maintained his consistent prominence in the realm of acting.
