Betty Field: Movies & Box Office

Betty Field (February 8, 1916 – September 13, 1973) was an esteemed American film and stage actress bred in Boston, Massachusetts, to George and Katharine. She had a passion for acting from a young age, commencing her acting journey before the age of 15. After graduating high school, she ventured into stock theater and furthered her craft at the esteemed American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Renowned producer/director George Abbott is credited with having discovered Field. Her acting proficiency saw her debut on the London stage in 1934 in Howard Lindsay's farce, 'She Loves Me Not.' Upon completing its run, Field returned to her homeland and graced several successful stages before her film debut in 1939. Notably, her Broadway credits are extensive, ranging from 'Page Miss Glory' in 1934 to 'All Over' in 1971. A member of The Actors Studio, Field largely had a penchant for Broadway performances. Despite the lure of Broadway, Field graced Hollywood recurrently appearing in films like 'Flesh and Fantasy,' 'Bus Stop,' and 'Birdman of Alcatraz.' Her final film role was in 'Coogan's Bluff' with Clint Eastwood and Susan Clark in 1968. Outside of film and theater, Field also made guest appearances on TV shows like Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Dr. Kildare and featured in radio series like 'The Aldrich Family.'
