Barbara Billingsley, born Barbara Lillian Combes on December 22, 1915 in Los Angeles, California, was the daughter of Lillian Agnes (née McLaughlin) and police officer Robert Collyer Combes. After her parents' divorce before she turned four, her mother worked as a forewoman in a knitting mill while her father later remarried and rose to assistant chief of police. Billingsley attended Los Angeles Junior College for a year before moving to New York, where a brief stint in the revue Straw Hat led her to work as a fashion model earning $60 a week. In 1945 she secured a contract with MGM and, after relocating to Los Angeles with her first husband, began accumulating uncredited and supporting film roles in titles such as Three Guys Named Mike (1951), The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and the sci‑fi classic Invaders from Mars (1953). Her early television work included guest spots on The Abbott and Costello Show and Four Star Playhouse, and a costarring role in the short‑lived sitcom Professional Father (1955).
