Maxwell Webster, a Montana attorney, finds his career stalling and worries that his wife, Julie Webster, believes he should be moving up faster. During a country club dinner, a tipsy Julie publicly extols his work in front of colleagues and urges him to ask his boss, Edmund Jethrow, for a partnership. Instead of a promotion, he loses his job and the couple must rethink their future.
They relocate to Los Angeles for a fresh start, squeezing into a modest house that shares a telephone line with a local bookie operation. With only twelve dollars to his name, the generous Max lends money to Dorianne Grey, a nightclub singer who later performs at a club where trouble brews. He also spends time with a young woman, Joyce Laramie, sharing study materials as they prepare for the California bar exam, a test she has already failed twice.
Misunderstandings fuel the trouble. A gambler, Eddie Tasling, believes Max is the bookie who owes him $800, a misread that pulls Joyce into an uneasy situation. Julie writes home to Montana, urging Max to reclaim his old position, while he chafes at her growing doubt about his abilities. Max ends up taking a job with a collection agency, initially at Joyce’s suggestion, only to discover the firm uses questionable tactics.
Things escalate when Eddie returns to threaten Max, and a confrontation triggers the involvement of mob boss Rodwell ‘Brick’ Davis. A fight erupts in Eddie’s club, where Dorianne Grey performs, and Max finds himself arrested as the trouble unfolds. In court, he defends himself, with Julie in his corner, and the verdict goes in his favor.
After the victory, Joyce reveals that both she and Max have passed the California bar. Julie, though shaken by her earlier behavior, is overjoyed to learn that a respected lawyer witnessed Max’s courtroom effort and has offered him a prestigious new opportunity. The story ends on a note of cautious optimism, showing a couple who navigate ambition, doubt, and resilience on the road to a shared professional future.
