Ruth Lee was born on September 14, 1895, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she developed her passion for performance from an early age. Her Broadway debut came in 1919 when she appeared as a member of the chorus in the musical Apple Blossoms, marking the beginning of her New York stage presence. Some of her most memorable appearances include playing the Mother in The Middleton Family at the New York World's Fair (1939), Mrs. MacCurdy in Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt (1943), and a gossipy woman in Charlie Chaplin's Monsieur Verdoux (1947). She also appeared in notable films such as The Stranger (1946), High Society (1956), and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947), often bringing depth to small character parts that enriched the cinematic tapestry of the Golden Age of Hollywood. In her personal life, she was married to fellow actor Grandon Rhodes, creating a theatrical partnership that lasted until her death. Ruth Lee passed away on August 3, 1975, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy as one of the industry's most dedicated character actresses.
