Hers to Hold 1943

Bill Morley, a bold former Flying Tiger, is a Vega Aircraft Corporation pilot awaiting his commission with the United States Army Air Forces. Together with his loyal sidekick Rosey Blake, he donates blood for the American Red Cross during a mandatory rest period, a quiet moment that foreshadows the comic misadventures to come.

During this pause, a bevy of photographers trails the singing socialite Penny Craig as she donates, their cameras catching her in the act. In the crowd, Bill, wearing a hospital white coat, seizes the chance to obtain Penny’s address by pretending to be a doctor. The masquerade reveals his charm and audacity, but it also sets in motion Penny’s plan to teach him a lesson.

Bill’s impersonation leads him to gatecrash a society soiree hosted by the Craig family. Penny, furious at the deception, schemes to humiliate him by turning him over to a raving hypochondriac friend and introducing him to a real medical professional. The moment becomes comic and a little chaotic as Bill, though embarrassed, leaves with his cool intact and even plants a public kiss on the object of his interest.

Penny, captivated by the audacious cad, falls in love and makes a bold move to win him over by seeking him out. She lands a job at the Vega Aircraft Factory as a riveter, finding a meaningful way to help the war effort while pursuing romance through song and resilience.

Between the factory work and onstage numbers, Penny hatches a plan to keep Bill from going on active service. Bill gradually finds his footing with her, but a shadow of doubt lingers: he fears leaving her behind, a widow in wartime, which complicates their budding romance.
