Marcy Lewis Jane Wyman is a young woman from Indiana with the dream of becoming an airline stewardess and seeing the world beyond her hometown. She completes an American Airlines training course and earns the opportunity to take to the skies, but her very first flight nearly ends in disaster after she accidentally offends the pilot, Mike Jamison Howard Keel and forgets the passengers’ food. Unknown to Marcy, Jamison’s intervention with her boss buys her a second chance, setting a tone of professional peril and personal interest that threads through everything to come.

Her base is moved to Los Angeles, where she shares an apartment with a friend from stewardess school. There she meets a passenger, Mike Lawrence Van Johnson, a graduate research student in biology, and soon faces another brush with trouble when she allows a young passenger to keep a dog in the cabin, defying airline rules. For this lapse, Marcy serves a one-week suspension, an early test of her resolve and patience.

While she searches for a new place to live, Marcy’s car battery dies, and a man named Mike Tracy Barry Sullivan comes to her aid by pushing the car start. Tracy, who works for a Chicago advertising agency, sparks a new possibility: an endorsement idea for soap featuring stewardesses, which quickly pleases his client and opens doors for Marcy herself to pose for magazine ads.

As Marcy moves into a bungalow with three of her stewardess friends, she must juggle a cast of would-be suitors who all turn out to be her three Mikes. To keep them straight, she assigns them nicknames: Mickey for Mike Tracy, Mike for Mike Lawrence, and Michael for Mike Jamison. The situation becomes chaotic when all three Mikes arrive to help with a move, each hoping to win her affection, and Marcy must navigate the tension without jeopardizing anyone’s career.

A party at the bungalow becomes a turning point. The photographer for the campaign—who has been drinking—presses his luck with Marcy, dressing her in a short sarong that starkly violates the regulation uniform. She resists his advances, a stand that triggers resentments and a confrontation. The three Mikes rally to protect her, but their intervention spirals into a public brawl that makes the newspapers and results in suspensions for Marcy and her pilot friend, and jeopardizes Mickey’s advertising account as well as Mike Jamison’s fellowship prospects at the college.

Determined to set things right, Marcy meets with the respective superiors to plead for reinstatement. Her earnest efforts pay off, and she succeeds in restoring their positions. With tensions eased, each of the Mikes proposes marriage as she stands by the gate of a departing plane. Faced with a difficult choice, Marcy responds to Mike Lawrence’s simple, heartfelt declaration, and the other two concede that he is the one she truly wants.

“I love you.”
