Barbara Bel Geddes was an American stage and screen actress whose career spanned almost five decades, leaving an indelible mark on Broadway, Hollywood, and television. Born on October 31, 1922 in New York City, she was the daughter of Helen Belle Schneider and the renowned designer Norman Bel Geddes, who created the family’s distinctive surname by merging his own with his wife’s middle name. She entered the professional world in 1941, quickly gaining acclaim for her performance in the 1946 Broadway hit Deep Are the Roots, which earned her the Clarence Derwent, Theatre World, and Donaldson awards for outstanding achievement. Over the next two decades she originated iconic roles such as Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955) and the title character in Mary, Mary (1961), both of which secured Tony nominations and cemented her reputation as a versatile leading lady.

Her film career launched with The Long Night (1947) opposite Henry Fonda, and she earned an Academy Award nomination for I Remember Mama (1948). In 1958 Alfred Hitchcock cast her as Midge in the classic thriller Vertigo, a role that remains a touchstone of her screen legacy. After a period of blacklisting in the 1950s, she transitioned to television, delivering a chilling performance in the famed Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode “Lamb to the Slaughter.” The pinnacle of her later career arrived in 1978 when she originated the matriarch Miss Ellie Ewing on the prime‑time soap Dallas, a part that won her a Primetime Emmy, a Golden Globe, and international fame. Despite serious health challenges—including a mastectomy and heart surgery—she returned to the role, becoming the only primetime star to relinquish and regain a lead part.
