Anna Lee (born Joan Boniface Winnifrith on 2 January 1913 in Ightham, Kent) was a distinguished British‑American actress whose career spanned more than seven decades, from the early sound era in England to iconic soap‑opera roles in the United States. Raised by a headmaster‑rector father and a mother of Anglican heritage, she was the goddaughter of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and grew up with a strong literary and theatrical environment that encouraged her ambitions. After training at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, she made her screen debut in His Lordship (1932) and quickly became a favored leading lady for Gainsborough Pictures, appearing in such varied productions as The Camels Are Coming, King Solomon’s Mines and the musical First a Girl. Her marriage in 1933 to director Robert Stevenson led to collaborative projects and, following a move to Hollywood in 1939, she joined the Hollywood studio system where she worked with John Ford on How Green Was My Valley and with John Wayne in Flying Tigers. In the United States she diversified into horror, thriller and television, starring in Fritz Lang’s Hangmen Also Die! (1943), Val Lewton’s Bedlam (1946) and later making memorable guest appearances on anthology series such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Perry Mason. The role that cemented her legacy in later life was that of matriarch Lila Quartermaine on the soap opera General Hospital, a performance that earned her a Soapy Award in 1983 and a posthumous Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Beyond the screen, Lee was a naturalised U.S. citizen, a staunch Conservative, and a dedicated fundraiser who received an MBE in 1982 for her work supporting heritage sites. Her personal life included three marriages—to Stevenson, to pilot George Stafford, and finally to novelist Robert Nathan—and five children, among them actress‑turned‑author Venetia Stevenson and actor Jeffrey Byron. Despite a tragic car accident in 1981 that left her paraplegic, she continued to work until shortly before her death from pneumonia on 14 May 2004, leaving a celebrated legacy that bridges British cinema’s golden age and American television’s enduring classics.
