Robert Coote (4 February 1909 – 26 November 1982) was an English actor celebrated for his impeccable portrayals of aristocratic and military characters across stage and screen. Born in London and educated at Hurstpierpoint College in Sussex, he launched his performing career at the tender age of sixteen, touring Britain, South Africa, and Australia before making his way to Hollywood in the late 1930s. His early film work featured memorable turn‑ups such as Sgt. Bertie Higginbotham in Gunga Din (1939) and a supporting role in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947). During World War II, Coote’s career was paused as he served with distinction as a squadron leader in the Royal Canadian Air Force, a period that deepened his resilience and added gravitas to his later performances. Upon returning to acting, he delivered a notable performance as Bob Trubshawe in Powell and Pressburger’s A Matter of Life and Death (1946), a film chosen for the inaugural Royal Film Performance. His cinematic résumé expanded through the 1950s, encompassing titles such as The Three Musketeers (1948) and Orson Welles’ Othello (1951).

Coote’s theatrical legacy is anchored by his creation of Colonel Hugh Pickering in the original Broadway production of My Fair Lady (1956–1962) and his later reprise in the 1976–1977 revival, as well as originating King Pellinore in Camelot (1960–1963). Television also benefitted from his talent; he earned an Emmy nomination for his role as Timmy St. Clair on The Rogues (1964–1965) and appeared in classic series like The Honeymooners and Nero Wolfe (1981). In his final film, Theatre of Blood (1973), he played one of Vincent Price’s critics, cementing his reputation as a versatile character actor. Coote passed away peacefully in his sleep at the New York Athletic Club at age 73, leaving behind a rich body of work that continues to be cherished by audiences and scholars alike.
