London, 1918: In a refined gentlemen’s club, Col. Brunswick regales junior officers with a story from his years in India, explaining that he earned his brigade command not by gallantry under fire but through a sequence of choices that nearly led to a court martial.

As the long-time commander of the 1st Battalion, the Rutlandshire Regiment, he keeps a tight circle: a trusted aide, Capt. Pindenny, and three capable but unreliable privates — Pvt. Archibald Ackroyd, Pvt. Dennis Malloy and Pvt. Bill Sykes — who for eighteen years have tested the Queen’s patience with drinking, fighting and gambling, a dynamic summed up by the phrase “the Queen’s hard bargain.”

To restore order, one man must be promoted to sergeant, and the reluctant choice falls to Ackroyd. Ordered from Hyderalipore to demonstrate force at Mirzabad, Brunswick and his battalion are recalled and placed under rival Col. Groat of the 28th Hussars, with his officious adjutant, Maj. Mercer.

A rift forms among the trio after Ackroyd’s promotion, but it begins to heal when he saves Sykes’ life. Sykes and Malloy press on with Mercer and Pindenny to an abandoned fort at Imara, where a calculated lure is set to trap the insurgent Manik Rao.

Back at Imara, the fort comes under attack and is overrun, with the surviving British troops taking refuge in the powder house. Rao threatens to blow them up if they surrender. In a bold turn, Ackroyd enters the fort in disguise, slays Rao, and saves the lives of the trapped soldiers.

Brunswick fears a court-martial, but he is convinced he was goaded by Groat into acting as he did to avoid officially starting a war. Groat’s insinuation suggests that Brunswick led his command in pursuit of the deserter Ackroyd, and Brunswick is promoted instead, while Ackroyd’s supposed desertion earns him a demotion back to private—the punishment he had hoped for.
