Alec McCowen, also known as Alexander Duncan McCowen, was an English actor renowned for his contributions to numerous film and stage productions. He was born on 26 May 1925 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, becoming a prominent figure in the acting world from 1942 to 2002. McCowen began his journey on the stage in August 1942 at the Repertory Theatre, undertaking his initial role as Micky in 'Paddy the Next Best Thing'. His reputation extended from his native England to New York City, where he made his debut in December 1951. Throughout his career, McCowen secured notable roles in well-regarded productions such as 'Moulin Rouge', 'The Matchmaker', 'The Representative', to name a few. He was recognized for his work with numerous accolades, including multiple Evening Standard Best Actor awards. McCowen made his film debut in 'The Cruel Sea' in 1953, with credits in movies such as 'Town on Trial', 'The Witches', 'Personal Services', and 'Henry V'. He also graced the small screen with performances in the BBC Television Shakespeare series, the sitcom 'Mr. Palfrey of Westminster', and a television adaptation of his one-man performance of 'The Gospel According to Saint Mark'. Aside from acting, McCowen wore the hat of a director; credited with successful revivals and adaptations. McCowen passed away at the age of 91, on 6 February 2017.
