Yogi’s Ark Lark 1972

Concerned about the terrible state of the environment, the entire animal kingdom from Hanna-Barbera gather for a meeting in Jellystone Park, chaired by Yogi Bear, Daws Butler. They decide to leave their homes and search for “the perfect place” — a legendary, trouble-free refuge free of pollution, deforestation, and mankind’s despoilment. Boo Boo, [Don Messick], voices a caution that Ranger Smith might not approve of such a departure, but the sense of urgency among the group pushes them to pursue a hopeful utopia nonetheless.

To make the journey possible, Jellystone’s maintenance man Noah Smitty, [Lennie Weinrib], helps them construct a flying ship that looks like a modern Noah’s Ark — complete with a propeller on top and retractable wheels — and they christen it after him, choosing the name “Noah’s Ark” on the bow rather than the longer alternative. The ship’s engines are powered by Magilla Gorilla, [Allan Melvin], who runs on a treadmill to keep the bananas fueling the mission within reach, turning a simple dream into a steadily moving voyage. With Yogi at the helm, the ark sets off on a globe-trotting quest, hoping to locate the elusive “perfect place.”

The voyage begins with a startling misadventure: the ship drives down a highway and plunges into the ocean, eventually resting on the back of a sleeping Moby Dick. Huckleberry Hound, [Daws Butler], is sent down to wake the colossal creature, fueling a sense that their search might be more perilous than anticipated. The crew then finds themselves stranded in the Sahara Desert, which they initially mistake for a beach, and the desert sun provokes a delirium in Yogi where he envisions himself as the pharaoh King Tut and his companions as loyal servants — a moment of comic illusion that Boo Boo and Noah Smitty soon dispel.

So-So the monkey spots what seems to be an oasis, described by the group as the “perfect place,” only to have reality intrude when a construction vehicle nearby reveals that a new city is taking shape. The crew quickly departs, unwilling to settle for a mirage. Their next destination is Antarctic territory, where they again attempt to make a home, only to face the same recurring issues that thwarted their earlier attempts. In a further twist of fortune, they drift into outer space after an oversized ascent, briefly imagining a better world among the stars, even as Earth continues to fling its junk into the void.

Back on the sea, morale among the ark’s passengers sinks as petty squabbles surface. A torrent of minor clashes erupts: water is sprayed, friendly jibes fly, and tensions flare as the crew tries to maintain order. Yogi Bear senses the growing rift just as So-So spots a looming typhoon, and the group must pull together or be ripped apart by the storm. They survive the typhoon, landing atop a mountain, where they almost convince themselves they’ve found the perfect place — only to be reminded once again that the search is flawed by the sight of a barren, deforested landscape.

At a turning point, the younger animals — eager to return home and mend what has been broken — decide that the only way to create a true perfect place is to start at home and repair the damage they’ve witnessed. They vote to return, united in a shared resolve to clean up the mess Earth has endured. The postlude reinforces this shift in perspective: as the credits roll, Wally Gator and Squiddly Diddly are seen cleaning rivers, Paw Rugg [Henry Corden] is picking up litter around his house, and Yogi Bear—even as he grapples with a world that isn’t perfect—pins a discarded hamburger wrapper, signaling a simple but meaningful commitment to stewardship. Squiddly Diddly makes a brief, hopeful appearance in the closing scenes, emphasizing that even playful creatures can contribute to a healthier world.
