Xiu Xiu, a teenage girl, is dispatched in 1975 to the desolate Sichuan steppes for compulsory manual labor as part of the Cultural Revolution's youth‑sent‑down program. Wen Xiu, a 15-year-old girl from Chengdu, is sent to the countryside to study horses under a nomadic Tibetan horseman, Lao Jin. She envisions that six months away will let her return to lead an all-girl cavalry, but the plan collapses when she learns she will not be allowed to go back.
With that shattered dream, Xiu Xiu clings to a faint hope offered by a traveling Peddler, who promises a way out but vanishes after their encounter. Left alone, she becomes vulnerable to a string of men who treat her as a means to satisfy their own desires, each one assuring her that they can help her return home even as their promises prove hollow.
