The tragic death of butcher Ge Xiaoda casts a long shadow over the community and puts his wife, Xiao Baicai, under intense scrutiny. She is accused of having an improper relationship with Yang Naiwu and of conspiring to murder her husband, a charge that thrusts them both into a high-stakes legal battle overseen by Governor Liu Xitong.
The case quickly narrows to questions of loyalty, desire, and power. Because Yang Naiwu is a Juren, his scholarly status shields him from torture, and he is confined rather than broken by force. Under Governor Liu’s interrogation, Xiao Baicai’s defenses falter, and she reveals a history with him that complicates the truth surrounding Ge Xiaoda’s death.
