Beauty is only skin deep. Tara Talbot suffers from hypertrichosis, a rare condition that leaves her covered in hair from head to toe. Tara, the Wolf Girl, is born into a financially struggling traveling freak show circus. She is cherished by her fellow performers but frequently ostracized by local teens in the towns they visit. In their latest stop, Tara clashes with the bullies who haunt the town, yet she also meets a teenage boy named Ryan Klein whose mother is working on an experimental depilatory treatment. Seeing Tara’s pain and wanting to help, Ryan helps her obtain the drug by stealing it from his mother’s lab. Tara’s hair begins to fall away, bringing not only relief but unsettling consequences: she starts to have vivid dreams and exhibits increasingly feral behaviors that unsettle even those who love her.
The circus itself begins to pivot around a darker, more lucrative appeal. Harley Dune, the sharp-eyed host of the show, senses that the town’s appetite for fear can be monetized, and the act grows more frightening in order to draw bigger crowds. This shift brings financial stability to the troupe, even as it heights the tension around Tara’s condition and the ethical line the troupe is willing to cross for the sake of survival. In this tense balance, a town bully named Beau lashes out at Tara after she accidentally uncovers a painful secret about him, a moment that sets off a chain of violent consequences. Tara defends herself, killing him in what she hopes is self-defense, and the incident is quickly discovered by the town, stirring a frenzy.
With the danger escalating, Tara is forced to steal additional doses of the depilatory drug after Ryan warns her that more supplies would draw his mother’s attention and suspicion. Under the drug’s influence, Tara’s grip on reality weakens further, and she lashes out during the show, leaving the audience and performers shaken. A lynch mob forms as the town grapples with fear, resentment, and the belief that Tara embodies a true threat. Tara flees into the forest, shedding the trappings of her act and attacking a fellow performer, Krystal by ripping out her tongue in a brutal moment that underscores the price of fear turned real. Ryan tracks Tara, attempting to soothe her, but his efforts are complicated when she notices he is carrying a gun.
As the last flickers of Tara’s humanity fade, Ryan pleads for mercy, but he cannot bring himself to shoot. Then a wolf appears, and the film cuts to a tense suspension: a shot rings out, and the wolf’s fate is left to the viewer. The circus departs the town without Tara, and it’s revealed that Ryan shot the wolf and presented its corpse to the townspeople, convincing them that Tara was a werewolf and thus no longer a threat to their safety. The ending settles into a haunting image: a feral, naked Tara moving on all fours through the woods, liberated from her hypertrichosis yet exacting a heavy toll on her humanity.
